My Last Wish — Affordable, Guided Will Creation for Everyone

When our client approached us with a bold vision — making legal will creation accessible, affordable, and entirely digital — we knew the project demanded more than a simple form builder. Writeawill.ai required the precision of a legal document, the warmth of a consumer product, and the security posture of a financial application. We delivered all three.

The Challenge

In the UK, solicitor-drafted wills typically cost £300–£1,000+, pricing out millions of people from a critical piece of estate planning. Our client wanted to build a platform that could guide users through the entire will-creation process with intelligent defaults, jurisdiction-aware legal clauses, and a price point that undercuts traditional services by over 80%.

What We Built

At its core, writeawill.ai is a sophisticated multi-step wizard that walks users through every aspect of will creation: personal details, beneficiary allocation, asset distribution, executor appointments, guardianship provisions, digital asset management, and final wishes. The wizard adapts dynamically — simpler estates see fewer steps, while complex situations surface additional sections like disinheritance clauses and legal provisions.

Every step features inline validation, contextual help tooltips, and plain-English toggles that translate legal jargon into everyday language. Users can pause at any point and return later; their progress is autosaved in real time with visual confirmation.

Technical Architecture

We built the frontend in React and TypeScript with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui, delivering a polished, accessible interface that works seamlessly across desktop and mobile. The component library includes over 150 purpose-built components — from percentage calculators and currency inputs to animated progress indicators and skeleton loading states.

The backend runs entirely serverless through Lovable Cloud, powering:

• Authentication with email verification, password reset flows, and session management

• Encrypted data storage with row-level security ensuring users can only access their own wills

• 20+ edge functions handling everything from Stripe payment processing and webhook handling to witness invitation emails, share link generation, and subscription management

• Real-time subscriptions for live dashboard updates

Key Features

Smart Wizard Flow — The adaptive step system analyses will complexity in real time, showing only relevant sections. A simple will with one beneficiary sees 8 steps; a complex estate with trusts, guardians, and digital assets sees 12.

Sharing & Collaboration — Users can generate secure, password-protected share links for executors and family members. Each link is time-limited, access-logged, and revocable. The system tracks view counts and sends email notifications on access.

Witness Coordination — The platform manages the legally required witness process digitally. Users invite witnesses via email, track invitation status, send reminders, and coordinate signing sessions — all from the dashboard.

Document Generation — On payment completion, the system generates a legally formatted PDF will pack, including the will itself, a witness checklist, executor instruction sheet, self-proving affidavit, and legal guide — all customised to the user's jurisdiction.

Comprehensive Dashboard — Users manage multiple wills, track recent activity, view billing history, configure notification preferences, and access sharing controls from a unified dashboard with quick-stats, search, and filtering.

Payment Integration — Stripe powers the checkout flow with jurisdiction-aware pricing, referral code discounts, couples bundle options, and annual maintenance upsells. Payment receipts are emailed automatically.

Security & Compliance

Security was non-negotiable. Every database table enforces row-level security policies. Authentication flows include rate limiting, audit logging, and account PIN protection. Share links use cryptographic tokens with expiration enforcement. The platform supports full GDPR compliance with data export and account deletion capabilities.

The Result

Writeawill.ai launched as a production-ready platform that transforms a traditionally intimidating legal process into a guided, 15-minute experience. The architecture supports thousands of concurrent users, scales without infrastructure management, and provides the security guarantees that sensitive legal documents demand.
